The Greater Houston Area Reading Council (GHARC) is a professional organization serving the districts in the Greater Houston Area for individuals who are genuinely concerned with the promotion of literacy particularly through the improvement of reading and language arts instruction at all levels.
MISSION The Greater Houston Area Reading Council is a non-profit, professional organization of educators, parents and individuals dedicated to the advancement of literacy.
PURPOSE The purpose of GHARC is to:
¨ inspire individuals to enjoy reading and teaching of reading, language and literacy. ¨ encourage the study of reading. ¨ stimulate and promote research in language and literacy. ¨ study the various factors that influence progress in reading, language and literacy. ¨ publish results of pertinent and significant investigations and practices. ¨ serve as a resource in the development of programs for continuation of professional growth. ¨ disseminate knowledge related to reading, language, and literacy through publications, conferences, meetings and other board-approved-activities. ¨ promote mutual understanding and cooperative work among educators in pre-school, elementary, junior high, high school, special areas, college, and leadership positions. ¨ promote communication and cooperation between parents and educators. ¨ promote service projects that encourage literacy in our community. ¨ promote family participation in literacy.
Board Meetings
